Report: 2026 Holiday Gift Recommendations in AI Search

When a shopper asks an AI assistant for gift ideas, the answer names a short list of brands, products and stores, and the majority of shoppers choose from that shortlist.[1] What makes a brand get recommended in a holiday gift AI answer? We asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews 100 holiday gift questions across 20 product types, and analyzed a total of over 2,000 runs of the answers. This report shows which brands the AI engines recommend, where they get their information, and what e-commerce brands can focus on to be included.

Key findings

Top 8 insights from the holiday AI answer data

94% of AI answers mentioned at least two of the key specs for their product type, such as capacity for air fryers or metal type for jewelry.

  4. A few large national retailers (excluding Amazon) appear in the majority of AI answers with shopping links

68% of ChatGPT and Google AI Overview answers with shopping links, linked to Walmart, Target, Nordstrom, Sephora or Ulta. None of their product offers came from Amazon.

  5. AI answers qualify each recommended product with who or what it is best for
